Where to stay in Vilnius
Choosing where to stay in Vilnius can look like a neighborhood question.
Old Town? Užupis? Naujamiestis? Somewhere quieter? Somewhere cheaper?
But I think the better question is this: which specific place will make your trip easier?
Vilnius is not a huge city, and many of the main places visitors want to see are quite close together. Because of that, I would not choose accommodation based only on the neighborhood name.
A good apartment just outside the Old Town can be better than a noisy hotel in the middle of it. A cheaper stay farther away can also become annoying if you spend too much time getting to and from the center.
So my honest answer is: start with the accommodation itself, then check the area.
This is how I usually choose places when I travel too: first I check whether the stay fits the actual trip, then I look at the area. Knowing Vilnius helps with the second part, because I can tell which locations are truly convenient and which ones only look good on a map.

I would personally start by looking in the Old Town or somewhere very close to it. It keeps things simple if you want to walk to restaurants, museums, churches, viewpoints and the pretty streets Vilnius is known for.
But I would not book a place only because it says “Old Town”. And I would not ignore Užupis, Paupys, Žvėrynas or the central part of Naujamiestis if the actual accommodation looks good.
The best place to stay in Vilnius is usually the one that fits your trip, not the one with the most popular neighborhood name.
How to choose where to stay in Vilnius
Before you start comparing Vilnius neighborhoods, decide what matters most for your trip.
Not in a vague “I want a nice place” way. Be specific.

Maybe you need parking because you’re coming by car. Maybe you want breakfast included because you do not want to think about food first thing in the morning. Maybe you’re traveling with children, pets or a big suitcase, so an elevator suddenly becomes very important.
Your priorities might be:
- Breakfast included
- Free parking
- Pet friendly
- Private bathroom
- Kitchen facilities
- Air conditioning
- Free cancellation
- Hotel, apartment or hostel
- Free Wi-Fi
Once you know what you actually need, use those filters on your booking site.
This makes the search much easier. Instead of looking at hundreds of places and trying to compare everything at once, you narrow it down to options that already fit your trip.
Only then would I look at the map.
Because a place in the “best” area is not that useful if it misses the one thing you really need.
How to check the location before booking
After you find a few places that match your priorities, check the location properly.
Not just “is it in Vilnius?” or “is it near the center?” Open the map and look at how you would actually get to the places you want to visit.

If the accommodation is in or near the Old Town, you will probably be able to walk to many main sights. If it is farther away, check public transport before booking.
I would look at:
- walking time to the Old Town or your main planned stops
- the nearest bus or trolleybus stop
- whether there is a direct route to the center
- how long the journey takes
- whether the route still looks simple in the evening
- what recent reviews say about noise
This is especially important if you choose a quieter or more residential area.
There is nothing wrong with staying farther from the center if that is what you want. But I would not do it without checking the route first. A calm area is nice, but not if you spend too much of your trip getting back and forth.

Best areas to consider in Vilnius
Vilnius neighborhoods can help you narrow down your search, but I would not choose accommodation based on the area alone.
I would treat the areas below as starting points for your search, not as a strict ranking.
The Old Town is the easiest choice if you want to stay close to the main sights, restaurants and pretty walking routes. It also has that Vilnius feeling many people come for: narrow streets, old buildings, church towers and small courtyards.
The downside is that some streets can be noisy, especially near bars, restaurants or busy roads. So if you’re a light sleeper, read the reviews carefully.
Užupis also has a specific vibe. It is a bit more artsy, relaxed and local-feeling, while still being close to the Old Town. It can be a lovely area to stay in if you like character and do not want everything to feel too polished.
Just check the exact location. “Near Užupis” on a booking map can mean a few different things.

Paupys is close to Užupis and the Old Town, but it feels more modern. It can work well if you find accommodation there that matches your budget and plans.
Naujamiestis is practical, especially the part closer to the center. It is not as charming as the Old Town, but you can find good apartments, cafes and easy routes into the main areas. If the place is deeper in Naujamiestis, check the walking time or transport before booking.
Žvėrynas is greener and quieter. It can be a good fit if you want a calmer stay, but I would only choose it if getting to the center is still simple.
For more residential areas farther out, I would not treat them as an easy budget solution. There may be fewer places to stay, and the price difference is not always worth the extra travel time.
Staying closer to the airport, around Naujininkai or nearby areas, mainly makes sense if you have an early flight or late arrival. For a regular city trip, I would usually stay closer to the center.

Where to stay in Vilnius on a budget
If you are looking for where to stay in Vilnius on a budget, I would still start with the same process: filters first, location second.
I would not assume that the cheapest good option will be in a residential area far from the center. Sometimes there are not many places available there, and the saving is not big enough to justify the extra travel time.
Instead, I would compare different accommodation types.

A simple hotel, a small apartment, a hostel room or a private room in a well-located place can all be good budget options. The best choice depends on what you need.
For example, an apartment with a kitchen may help you save money on food. A hotel with breakfast may be easier for a short trip. A hostel can be cheaper, but only if the room type and bathroom setup work for you.
For budget stays, I would pay extra attention to reviews. Cheap is only helpful if the place is clean, safe-feeling and easy enough to reach.
Best accommodation type for your trip
The best type of accommodation in Vilnius depends on how you travel.
A hotel is the easiest choice if you want a reception desk, breakfast, luggage storage and fewer small decisions. I would look at hotels for a short stay, a late arrival or a trip where I want everything to feel simple.
An apartment can be better if you want more space, a kitchen or a quieter setup. This is useful for a longer stay, a family trip or slow mornings without hotel breakfast times.
A hostel makes sense if budget matters most, or if you like a more social stay. I would still check the exact room type, bathroom setup and recent reviews. A low price is not enough if you cannot sleep well.
Whatever you choose, do not trust the photos too much. Of course they matter, but they are made to look good.
The reviews are usually more useful, but I would not follow them blindly either. People care about different things. For one person, no elevator is a huge problem. For someone else, it is barely worth mentioning.

So if you see a bad review, do not only look at the score. Read what actually went wrong.
Was it noisy? Was the room cold? Was check-in confusing? Were there too many stairs? Was parking difficult?
Then ask yourself if that would bother you too.
Sometimes a bad review points out something important. Other times, it is about a detail that may not matter for your trip at all.
Final thoughts on where to stay in Vilnius
Choosing where to stay in Vilnius does not have to start with finding the perfect neighborhood.
I would start with what you actually need from the stay: parking, breakfast, quiet nights, more space, easy check-in or a lower price. Then I would check which places match those needs and whether the location works for your plans.
The Old Town or somewhere very close to it is usually the simplest option, but it is not the only good one. Užupis, Paupys, Naujamiestis, Žvėrynas or even a more practical airport-side stay can make sense in the right situation.
Just do not choose based on the area name alone.
Look at the actual place, read the reviews carefully and check the route before you book. A good stay should make your Vilnius trip easier, not add extra small problems every day.
